CONTROL VALVES AND SAFTY VALVES


Control valves and safety valves are both valves that regulate flow, but they have different purposes and functions: 

 

·       Control valves


Regulate the flow of fluids like oil, water, gas, and steam by changing the size of the flow passage. Control valves are often used in control loops to maintain a desired process variable, such as pressure, temperature, or liquid level. They receive signals from a controller, which compares the actual flow rate to the desired set point, and then moves the valve to adjust the flow rate. 

 

·      Safety valves

 

Designed to open and release excess pressure from equipment or vessels to prevent dangerous pressure increases that could cause explosions. Safety valves are designed to close again once the pressure has dropped to a safe level. They are often used as the last line of defense in steam boilers. 

 

 Advantages and Disadvantages of Safety valves and control valves 


·       Safety valves

Protect systems from overpressure, which can cause malfunctions, explosions, or fire hazards.

 

Advantages

 

·       Fast opening: Safety valves open quickly to remove unwanted pressure from a system. 

·       Automatic relief: Safety valves can automatically relieve pressure in an emergency. 

·       Mechanical parts: Safety valves only have mechanical parts, which can operate when other safety devices fail. 

 

Disadvantages


Safety valves can open before the set pressure is reached and are susceptible to back pressure

 

·      Control valves

 

These valves are popular in industrial applications.

 

Advantages

 

·       Easy to install: Control valves are easy to install, which can save time and effort. 

·       Automatic operation: Control valves can be operated automatically, which removes the need for an operator to open and close them. 

·       Prevent clogging: Control valves are designed to prevent fluids from being obstructed, so they don't clog. 

·       Environmental benefits: Control valves can help reduce the waste of natural resources and water, which can help meet global ecological standards and save money. 

 

·        Disadvantages

 

Control valves can corrode over time and may need to be maintained. They can also accumulate debris, which may require regular cleaning.
